How to start writing

  • Many of those who are fond of literature, at least once in their lives, have wondered how to get into. To answer this question, these people need to study the experience of other famous writers who have already achieved stunning success in their field. There are the most diverse “recipes” for writing literary bestsellers, which once again confirms the fact that there is no single truth. Each famous writer had his own path and any person can start theirs one day.

Today we will try to make this path a little easier for you by giving advice on how to start off a story and getting started writing.

  • Is writing talent or skill?

Who can start writing? Anyone. It’s just that not everyone sees the benefits of having their own book and genuinely wants to do this. What can you write a book about? About anything. But it makes sense to write only a book that will be interesting to readers and have the potential of a bestseller. There are several practically win-win options:

• describe the personal experience (and hook the audience “with life”);

• describe the professional experience and show behind the scenes;

• combine the first two options.

Why are these options almost win-win? Because people are always interested in someone else’s personal life. And not only the life of the stars but the life of the most ordinary people – a neighbor, a boss, an employee, a stranger on the street.

Writing doesn’t require specific skills, if you are literate and have at least some experience in reading, chances are you will manage to form your thoughts into a more or less comprehensive story. As you should write for a specific reader, you will surely find you a narrow target audience. Because a book, like any other product, must satisfy some human need. Examples:

• a desire to see the backstage of someone’s profession (business);

• the desire to “penetrate” into private life;

• help solve a personal or professional problem (there are even books about how to write a story or a book, find a woman online or win a million dollars).

You can upgrade your skills of writing and acquire a certain style (it can be short and logical like Hemingway’s or long and descriptive like Jules Verne’s). But writing is not just a natural vocation, you can develop it.

  • How to prepare for writing work?      1 paragraph intro

Step 1: “Practice the stories”

Firstly, we do not advise you to undertake writing a novel, if you have not written at least five or six stories. After all, it is only at first glance very simple – sit down at the computer, and write the chapter after chapter. In practice, creativity is hard and tedious work, which requires, in addition to perseverance, specific training, knowledge of the many subtleties and patterns. Therefore, if you sit down to write a novel without any experience working on at least stories, you will most likely fail and the matter will not be completed. Before seeking ways to start a story, you need to do research and decide what to write. If you want to write a book about women’s psychology or relationships, use european women dating site for live communication. Writing a book about the business you will have to talk with several entrepreneurs and coaches.

Step 2: “Decide on an idea”

Secondly, if you still decide to write a novel, you must clearly determine for yourself what it will be about and what you want to convey to the reader with its help. Until a clear understanding of these issues arises in the head, a book cannot be written. Any major literary work should carry some idea, and it is better, of course, if this idea stands out against the general background. And even if you decide to write a book based on the events of your own life, the main idea should still be present in it. Your book will not get popular and be selling well without the idea. Unless you wonder how to begin a story for your relatives and family and not the broad audience.

Step 3: “Make a general plan of the novel”

Once you have strengthened your desire to learn how to write and have considered the main idea of the book, proceed to the preparation stage. It is likely that the preparation will stretch for several months. This should not confuse or excite you. Believe us, it should be so. We highly recommend that you do not start writing the text before the preparatory phase is completed, otherwise, you will most likely have to rewrite your book in whole or in part. And to cut and redraw an already finished text is psychologically very unpleasant.

Step 4: “Make a detailed plan for each chapter”

After you have your general plan for the book ready, start making plans for each chapter. How to begin a story, how it will end, the main character, etc. If a lot of chapters are planned (more than ten), then it’s wise to start writing directly after completing the next plan — this will make things more fun. However, do not forget that sitting down for writing without a ready-made general plan is extremely undesirable. Getting inspired and learning how to get into writing is not hard but to keep working until the end is way more difficult.

In the plan of each chapter you enter:

  • Synopsis of the chapter;
  • Heroes;
  • Locations of the chapter;
  • A brief and consistent description of all the events in the chapter, divided into scenes.

Step 5: “Edit the written text”

The final stage, which, in principle, can last indefinitely. Editing consists in re-reading the text repeatedly and correcting the errors found, polishing the formulations, combating cliches and parasitic words:

  • Reading text out loud from a monitor screen. It helps to correct the rhythm and melody of the written.
  • Reading text to yourself from paper. Surprisingly, as soon as the text appears on paper, it becomes completely different from the one that we so long and stubbornly corrected on the computer screen. Mistakes immediately catch the eye.
  • Correction of errors and typos found by critics. Usually, after the author has gone through all the steps of editing, you should give the manuscript to a knowledgeable person so that, after reading, they can indicate errors.
  • Is it important to practice a lot?

Very often, young writers make a grave mistake when they start writing stories: they begin to suffer from graphomania or baseless writing which are not good ways to start a story. Think about it, did you ever have such that after reading a story you had the thought: “Why did I even read this?”. If so, then this means that you have already become acquainted with the work of the graphomaniac. Such people usually pay a lot of attention to trifles and like to add unnecessary details. They can describe in hundreds of epithets the majesty of the wing flutter of the butterfly, stretch the scene or character’s awakening over several pages, describe in many words the person’s reaction to the sudden rain. Simply put, graphomaniacs really like words, they write to use as many words as possible and can paint in all colors the action, which could be described in three words. Here is an example:

  • An ordinary person writes: “When the sun rose, Andrew realized that he still couldn’t fall asleep.”
  • The graphomaniac writes: “As soon as the bright sun illuminated the earth with its fiery rays, the guy lying on the bed and drowning in his thoughts suddenly realized that now he certainly could not sleep.”

Feel the difference? Perhaps someone may like this writing style, as the text does not look so “dry”. But if you write each sentence in this way, then the text will turn out to be too difficult to understand. To avoid this you should practice and write briefly but brightly and emotionally will get easier.

  • Tips for beginning writers. Some more tips on how to start a story:

1) Free your mind and start from scratch

Just write down your train of thoughts. And look where it leads you. Write for yourself. This is the famous Chukchi method. And after you receive several pages of information, you can sort it out, leave what is connected to your plan and topic and delete the rest. Even if the chapter turns out not as planned, you can adhere to the plan to it if you are sure that this way the book will turn out better.

2) Write every day

Set yourself a minimum free writing per day. Like 25 minutes and the maximum is 1 hour. This is the 3 Leverage skill-building method.

  • Every day that you create, you gain experience.
  • The time when you write – you should only write and do not get distracted.
  • Turn off all available sources. 2 hours, 25 minutes or 1 hour or day – it doesn’t matter as long as you keep going.

3) Create a plan of chapters

Each article will be valuable and complete. And you will receive satisfaction from each written and published article.

4) Look for facts and additions to your book

When you want to relax and have fun, do it profitably. Look for interesting facts, quotes, jokes. Material for books. Then any pastime becomes a creative process.

5) Read best-selling books on your topic

Study books of the best authors who have already firmly taken their place in the minds of your potential readers. To confirm your assumptions and new discoveries. It’s easier to stand on the “shoulders of the giants” than to fight them. After reading the chapter of the best-selling book, draw your own conclusion.

  • Remember all these simple recommendations about how to start writing, constantly read other people’s work, be inspired and take your time to write a book as soon as possible. Only in this case will you be able to write a really good work.
